IIT Madras and In­dian Rail­ways to es­tab­lish a Cen­tre for Rail­way Re­search

The In­dian Rail­ways has en­tered into a mem­o­ran­dum of un­der­stand­ing with IIT Madras to of­fer de­gree, post-grad­u­ate and PhD pro­grammes. The cour­ses at the Cen­tre for Rail­way Re­search (CRR) at IIT-M will also have re­search projects and elec­tives re­lated to rail­way tech­nol­ogy. The cen­tre has plans to fo­cus on re­search re­lated to the struc­tural health mon­i­tor­ing of rail­way in­fra­struc­ture (rails, bridges, en­gines, wag­ons/coaches, elec­tri­cal and sta­tions) by em­bed­ded in­tel­li­gence, in­tel­li­gent trans­porta­tion, com­puter vi­sion and imag­ing tech­nolo­gies, ad­vanced tech­niques for trains con­trol and com­mu­ni­ca­tion. For im­ple­men­ta­tion of the pro­gramme, an ad­vi­sory com­mit­tee, com­pris­ing of­fi­cers from the In­dian Rail­ways and the fac­ulty mem­bers of IIT-M, will be formed.

The in­au­gu­ral edi­tion of Ma­te­rial Han­dling Equip­ment Expo 2015 saw many in­dus­try stal­warts and charis­matic lead­ers from the Ma­te­rial Han­dling Equip­ment In­dus­try and al­lied ver­ti­cals. The Ma­te­rial Han­dling Equip­ment Expo 2015 was sup­ported by the So­ci­ety of In­dian Ma­te­ri­als Han­dling Equip­ment Man­u­fac­tur­ers (SIMHEM). In­au­gu­rated by Rear Ad­mi­ral, S.P. Lal, Naval Dock­yard, Mum­bai, the expo pro­vided an op­por­tu­nity for all rel­e­vant stake­hold­ers to wit­ness var­i­ous prod­uct tech­nolo­gies that were dis­played by a num­ber of ex­hibit­ing com­pa­nies. Also present on the oc­ca­sion were R V Gandhi, GRP Ltd; Tom Thomas, CEAT Ltd; Gur­dip Singh Anand, Uni­ver­sal Busi­ness School. Pro­fes­sion­als from var­i­ous in­dus­try ver­ti­cals such as Au­to­ma­tion, Au­to­mo­bile, Build­ing and Con­struc­tion, Cargo, Elec­tron­ics and Elec­tri­cals, Pack­ag­ing, Pa­per and more vis­ited the Expo.
