The petrochem and chemical products may soon have mandatory standards to be followed.“There is a need to make standard mandatory for these products. Out of 1,200, only one product category has mandatory standards as of now,’’ P Raghavendra Rao, Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, said at a road show on India Chem 2018, Mumbai.

The government will work on how to make these voluntary and selfregulatory standards as mandatory norms, stating that such measures will help the industry to be globally competitive. Observing that India is now a net importer of chemicals and petrochemicals, Rao said manufacturing of chemicals should be stepped up to increase exports.
