A Startling Revelation
AMIDST COMMERCIAL CINEMA, MASTERPIECE DIRECTORIALS OFTEN GO UNNOTICED! THIS MONTH, GUEST WRITER SHRIRAM IYER, AN INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEER BY PROFESSION AND MOVIE BUFF BY PASSION, BRINGS YOU THE BEST ELEMENTS OF THE SHORT FILM, BOMBAY MIRROR.
Director Shlok Sharma brilliantly brings to the audience, characters that are entirely driven by the plot and the unpredictability of human nature when faced with communal and religious beliefs! Starting off with sounds that confront us with the busy streets of Mumbai and opening up to the sounds of the sprinkler at a local shaving shop, the short-film takes off with Shakeel entering the salon for a quick trim. Exchanging pleasantries with Ramesh, Shakeel talks of his interview scheduled for the day. Ramesh is quick to recall the conversation he has had with Shakeel’s mother the previous day showcasing their friendly ties. While Ramesh is prodding Shakeel to show erotic videos that they had seen together in one of their regular meets, Shakeel pushes him to get started with his work while smirking throughout! A still very jovial Ramesh, who sets the blade to give a good shave, is encountered by a mob urgently asking both to stay put, leaving them anxious and perturbed. The very next second, a fight showing communal friction is seen wherein a community brethren of Ramesh is mercilessly killed! Witnessing this brutal kill triggers off something within Ramesh that leaves the audience almost wanting to stop him from taking the predictable next step! A shrewd and effective change of music, depicting a drastic change of emotions, leaves the audiences’ hearts racing! A situation where Ramesh is about to slit Shakeel’s throat to avenge his brethren’s death, a helpless Shakeel is seen trying to stop him from taking the extreme measure. In a scene that truly leaves all utterly bewildered, see for yourself if Ramesh can resist the impulse to slits Shakeel’s throat. Will he go to the aid of his dying brethren? What will he discover then? Watch the highly impactful film to find out the startling truth that Ramesh discovers at the end of the film. Followed by a deafening silence, the climax leaves everyone utterly shocked! This sure is one great short-film that makes for an immensely gratifying viewing experience. A few concise minutes can, at times, stay with you for a lifetime… Bombay Mirror is one such short film to watch out for!
