Pune Pro­fes­sor Held for Mo­lest­ing Iran Stu­dent

A 53-year-old pro­fes­sor and PhD guide was ar­rested by Kothrud po­lice for mo­lest­ing and sex­u­ally ha­rass­ing an Ira­nian stu­dent in his col­lege room ear­lier in the af­ter­noon af­ter promis­ing to en­rol her for a doc­toral pro­gramme. The pro­fes­sor was ar­rested un­der Sec­tion 354 (mo­lesta­tion) of the IPC. He teaches in a col­lege run by a deemed uni­ver­sity in the city. In her com­plaint, the woman said the pro­fes­sor told her that there would not be any trou­ble in se­cur­ing ad­mis­sion if she main­tained sex­ual re­la­tions with him. Po­lice in­spec­tor Shankar Khatke said the woman came to Pune in De­cem­ber 2016 on a stu­dent visa. The woman be­gan to visit the pro­fes­sor to seek his guid­ance about get­ting her an ad­mis­sion. Re­cently, she went to the col­lege to meet the pro­fes­sor to nd out if there was any devel­op­ment re­gard­ing the ad­mis­sion. “The pro­fes­sor... told her the en­rol­ment would take some more time. He then de­manded sex­ual favours from her and mo­lested her in the room,” Khatke said.
