New mo­bile app MALLBUZZ is help­ing peo­ple shop in­tel­li­gently at malls

AD­NAN CON­TRAC­TOR, one of the part­ners at SquareClues, tells us about the mo­bile app MALLBUZZ they have cre­ated, which can help peo­ple in buy­ing de­ci­sions while shop­ping at malls!

Tell us a lit­tle about your­self…

We are the brother-sis­ter duo, Ad­nan Con­trac­tor and Maria Katab­ji­wala. Both of us are Soft­ware En­gi­neers hav­ing over 20 years of ex­pe­ri­ence be­tween us. The ex­ten­sive ex­pe­ri­ence of work­ing in the soft­ware in­dus­try has turned us into hard­core an­a­lyt­i­cal thinkers and highly fo­cused in­di­vid­u­als. One thing that de­fines us is our love for build­ing prac­ti­cally use­ful prod­ucts. The se­cret to cre­at­ing such prod­ucts is a great user-cen­tric de­sign, and that is what we focus on.

Tell us more about your ven­ture. How did you think of the idea?

SquareClues is a young and dy­namic or­gan­i­sa­tion based in Pune, founded in 2016, with an aim to re­duce the gap be­tween shop­pers and re­tail brands. There are a lot of in­for­ma­tion dis­cov­ery tools, which are already avail­able in the mar­ket, but this in­for­ma­tion is not stream­lined. So, it be­comes dif­fi­cult for a per­son to take a de­ci­sion based on scat­tered

in­for­ma­tion. So there is a big need for a so­lu­tion that helps to ad­dress the spe­cific needs of peo­ple, by con­nect­ing them to their favourite brands. We our­selves faced this prob­lem and went look­ing for a so­lu­tion, but didn’t find any sat­is­fac­tory an­swer. So, we thought, why not build one? ‘MallBuzz’ is a mo­bile app that gives users in­for­ma­tion about lat­est of­fers and events in malls. It also helps them eas­ily lo­cate brand stores in malls.

To start a com­pany, there is al­ways an in­spi­ra­tion be­hind it. So what in­spired you to start SquareClues?

I wanted to do some shop­ping for an up­com­ing fam­ily wed­ding, but didn’t have enough time. So dur­ing the lunch hours, I headed to a mall near my of­fice. In­side the mall, I saw many of­fers run­ning in ev­ery store and got con­fused where to shop. I had no way of de­ter­min­ing which of­fer would be best for me; as a re­sult, I ended up buy­ing noth­ing. We re­al­ized that both of us had faced sim­i­lar is­sues. Through an ex­ten­sive user re­search, we found that this is a gen­uine prob­lem faced by many of us, and there aren’t any good so­lu­tions, which pro­vide the re­quired in­for­ma­tion in a user-friendly way. So, we set out to fill this need and cre­ated MallBuzz, that helps peo­ple find ex­actly what they are look­ing for, be it shop­ping, food or fun.

What are the unique fea­tures of the MallBuzz app?

User Cen­tric De­sign: MallBuzz boasts of an amaz­ing user-friendly de­sign. Power Search: Pow­er­ful and com­pre­hen­sive search and fil­ter fea­ture, where users can search shops and of­fers by dif­fer­ent cri­te­ria, like Cat­e­gory, Brand and Type. Vis­ual De­pic­tion: Lo­cate the stores on the mall’s layout with a few taps. Find your way across the huge mall and never get lost again.

As re­gards ser­vices and tar­get au­di­ence, what does your ven­ture of­fer and to whom?

MallBuzz is a new age, smart in­for­ma­tion dis­cov­ery plat­form, which stream­lines in­for­ma­tion as per the user’s need. Our users are tech-savvy, fash­ion-con­scious, food-lov­ing and trendy. MallBuzz pro­vides a quick and con­ve­nient way to ac­cess the malls near you, bring­ing you the lat­est deals, hap­pen­ing events, and your favourite brands lo­cated in­side malls. It has an in­tu­itive search mech­a­nism that helps you find stores and of­fers of a par­tic­u­lar cat­e­gory or a brand, and pin­point their ex­act lo­ca­tion on the mall’s map. There’s no need to down­load sep­a­rate apps for each mall, as MallBuzz is the one app for all your mall needs.

Ac­cord­ing to you, why do you think now is the time for your com­pany to ex­ist?

We be­lieve that the best time to do any­thing is ‘Right Now’. To­day, we are spoilt for choice. Peo­ple in­vest more time to re­search a prod­uct be­fore buy­ing. The same is true when try­ing out a res­tau­rant. But the down­side is that we get flooded with so much in­for­ma­tion, that most times it be­comes dif­fi­cult to make de­ci­sions. What we need is a so­lu­tion that stream­lines all the in­for­ma­tion smartly and presents it in a way that can be uti­lized bet­ter, and hence sim­plify our lives.

Team­work is re­quired for an or­gan­i­sa­tion to achieve suc­cess. With­out it, the or­gan­i­sa­tion can’t sus­tain for long. What do you have to say about your team?

We have an ex­cep­tional team help­ing us with the mar­ket­ing and pro­mo­tion of MallBuzz. Man­jula Nair and her RealBuzZone team are real go-get­ters. They have some bril­liant ideas and have ex­e­cuted them skil­fully to in­crease our brand value. From day one, when we met her, we re­al­ized that she would be the right per­son for us.

If you weren’t build­ing your start up, what would you be do­ing?

If not for this, we would have been truly mis­er­able. When you are build­ing a start up, you have to re­ally get out of your com­fort zone and do any­thing

and ev­ery­thing that needs to be done. As an en­tre­pre­neur, your growth is mul­ti­di­men­sional and the ex­pe­ri­ence you get is un­matched. Ev­ery day, we get up with a smile on our faces, roar­ing to take on the next chal­lenge head-on. We en­joy each and ev­ery op­por­tu­nity, and hence we know that if we were not build­ing this amaz­ing start up, we would be surely ap­pre­hen­sive about our fu­ture.

At the mo­ment, how do you mea­sure suc­cess?

If given a choice, we would love to mea­sure our suc­cess by the num­ber of times we bring a smile to our users, when we help them make a great buy­ing de­ci­sion. We would call our ven­ture suc­cess­ful when MallBuzz be­comes an in­te­gral part of peo­ple’s ev­ery­day life.

What’s most ex­cit­ing about your ven­ture to date?

Each day un­folds newer chal­lenges, and we have to be ready for it. It’s ex­cit­ing to see our vi­sion turn­ing into re­al­ity and mak­ing a dif­fer­ence in peo­ple’s lives. Study­ing and un­der­stand­ing the mind­set of app users and re­search­ing what their is­sues are, what they like or what puts them off, and how they want their in­for­ma­tion to be pre­sented, are the most ex­cit­ing things to work on!

In terms of growth, what are your plans for the next year?

By next year, MallBuzz is ex­pected to hit other cities of In­dia, so that we can help more peo­ple to sim­plify their lives. We also want to en­hance the already smart app and make it more awe­some by adding a num­ber of user­centric fea­tures.

What do you think is the big­gest threat to your busi­ness?

My big­gest threat is that aliens tak­ing over the world one day; I just can’t imag­ine it! Other threats in­clude, zom­bie apoc­a­lypse, robots turn­ing against hu­mans, and peo­ple l os­ing in­ter­est in shop­ping.

As for the fu­ture roadmap, what is your vi­sion for the ven­ture?

We have a clear vi­sion for SquareClues. We want to turn into a so­phis­ti­cated, an­a­lyt­ics-driven plat­form, which helps peo­ple make smarter buy­ing de­ci­sions. We want to be the go-to so­lu­tion for brands, so that they can reach out to their tar­get cus­tomers. The MallBuzz app is the first step in that di­rec­tion, and we have a lot more things in the pipeline.

Lastly, how would you de­scribe your com­pany in one sen­tence?

SquareClues is about cre­at­ing smart so­lu­tions to sim­plify buy­ing de­ci­sions.
