New mobile app MALLBUZZ is helping people shop intelligently at malls
ADNAN CONTRACTOR, one of the partners at SquareClues, tells us about the mobile app MALLBUZZ they have created, which can help people in buying decisions while shopping at malls!
Tell us a little about yourself…
We are the brother-sister duo, Adnan Contractor and Maria Katabjiwala. Both of us are Software Engineers having over 20 years of experience between us. The extensive experience of working in the software industry has turned us into hardcore analytical thinkers and highly focused individuals. One thing that defines us is our love for building practically useful products. The secret to creating such products is a great user-centric design, and that is what we focus on.
Tell us more about your venture. How did you think of the idea?
SquareClues is a young and dynamic organisation based in Pune, founded in 2016, with an aim to reduce the gap between shoppers and retail brands. There are a lot of information discovery tools, which are already available in the market, but this information is not streamlined. So, it becomes difficult for a person to take a decision based on scattered
information. So there is a big need for a solution that helps to address the specific needs of people, by connecting them to their favourite brands. We ourselves faced this problem and went looking for a solution, but didn’t find any satisfactory answer. So, we thought, why not build one? ‘MallBuzz’ is a mobile app that gives users information about latest offers and events in malls. It also helps them easily locate brand stores in malls.
To start a company, there is always an inspiration behind it. So what inspired you to start SquareClues?
I wanted to do some shopping for an upcoming family wedding, but didn’t have enough time. So during the lunch hours, I headed to a mall near my office. Inside the mall, I saw many offers running in every store and got confused where to shop. I had no way of determining which offer would be best for me; as a result, I ended up buying nothing. We realized that both of us had faced similar issues. Through an extensive user research, we found that this is a genuine problem faced by many of us, and there aren’t any good solutions, which provide the required information in a user-friendly way. So, we set out to fill this need and created MallBuzz, that helps people find exactly what they are looking for, be it shopping, food or fun.
What are the unique features of the MallBuzz app?
User Centric Design: MallBuzz boasts of an amazing user-friendly design. Power Search: Powerful and comprehensive search and filter feature, where users can search shops and offers by different criteria, like Category, Brand and Type. Visual Depiction: Locate the stores on the mall’s layout with a few taps. Find your way across the huge mall and never get lost again.
As regards services and target audience, what does your venture offer and to whom?
MallBuzz is a new age, smart information discovery platform, which streamlines information as per the user’s need. Our users are tech-savvy, fashion-conscious, food-loving and trendy. MallBuzz provides a quick and convenient way to access the malls near you, bringing you the latest deals, happening events, and your favourite brands located inside malls. It has an intuitive search mechanism that helps you find stores and offers of a particular category or a brand, and pinpoint their exact location on the mall’s map. There’s no need to download separate apps for each mall, as MallBuzz is the one app for all your mall needs.
According to you, why do you think now is the time for your company to exist?
We believe that the best time to do anything is ‘Right Now’. Today, we are spoilt for choice. People invest more time to research a product before buying. The same is true when trying out a restaurant. But the downside is that we get flooded with so much information, that most times it becomes difficult to make decisions. What we need is a solution that streamlines all the information smartly and presents it in a way that can be utilized better, and hence simplify our lives.
Teamwork is required for an organisation to achieve success. Without it, the organisation can’t sustain for long. What do you have to say about your team?
We have an exceptional team helping us with the marketing and promotion of MallBuzz. Manjula Nair and her RealBuzZone team are real go-getters. They have some brilliant ideas and have executed them skilfully to increase our brand value. From day one, when we met her, we realized that she would be the right person for us.
If you weren’t building your start up, what would you be doing?
If not for this, we would have been truly miserable. When you are building a start up, you have to really get out of your comfort zone and do anything
and everything that needs to be done. As an entrepreneur, your growth is multidimensional and the experience you get is unmatched. Every day, we get up with a smile on our faces, roaring to take on the next challenge head-on. We enjoy each and every opportunity, and hence we know that if we were not building this amazing start up, we would be surely apprehensive about our future.
At the moment, how do you measure success?
If given a choice, we would love to measure our success by the number of times we bring a smile to our users, when we help them make a great buying decision. We would call our venture successful when MallBuzz becomes an integral part of people’s everyday life.
What’s most exciting about your venture to date?
Each day unfolds newer challenges, and we have to be ready for it. It’s exciting to see our vision turning into reality and making a difference in people’s lives. Studying and understanding the mindset of app users and researching what their issues are, what they like or what puts them off, and how they want their information to be presented, are the most exciting things to work on!
In terms of growth, what are your plans for the next year?
By next year, MallBuzz is expected to hit other cities of India, so that we can help more people to simplify their lives. We also want to enhance the already smart app and make it more awesome by adding a number of usercentric features.
What do you think is the biggest threat to your business?
My biggest threat is that aliens taking over the world one day; I just can’t imagine it! Other threats include, zombie apocalypse, robots turning against humans, and people l osing interest in shopping.
As for the future roadmap, what is your vision for the venture?
We have a clear vision for SquareClues. We want to turn into a sophisticated, analytics-driven platform, which helps people make smarter buying decisions. We want to be the go-to solution for brands, so that they can reach out to their target customers. The MallBuzz app is the first step in that direction, and we have a lot more things in the pipeline.

SquareClues is about creating smart solutions to simplify buying decisions.
