Trichy to have solar-powered bus shelters
Eighteen solar powered bus shelters and solar powered lights will be set up in Trichy as part of the Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2012. Construction of four of the bus shelters has already commenced in Karumandapam area of the city. After Delhi, Trichy is the second city in India to have solar powered bus shelters.
The roof of the shelters will be made of fibre glass, generating around 200 watts power. An 11 watt light can be used to light up the shelter using the power generated. Additionally, all bus shelters will also be equipped with cell phone chargers powered by solar energy.
The funds required for construction of the shelters and solar lights have been sanctioned by an AIADMK minister from the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund. The shelters and solar lights are expected to be set up at a cost of Rs 99.70 lakh, with Rs 92.5 lakh set aside for bus shelters and Rs 7.20 lakh for solar power lights. The bus shelters cost between Rs 4.5-9 lakh apiece.
