Punjab government hikes bus fares
The Punjab state government has hiked bus fares for bus services by 20 percent, at 13 paise per km, owing to the hike in diesel prices. Following the Rs 5 hike in diesel rates, both private and public operators had placed a demand before the state government to hike bus fares accordingly. While private operators demanded an increase of 15 paise per km, PRTC and Punjab Roadways demanded 22 paise per km increase in fares. But, the state government, moderated the hike to 13 paise. Commuters now have to shell out 79 paise per km as against the previous 66 paise per km. This is the third hike in the state in the past 2 years. In 2010, fares had been hiked by 7 paise per km from 49 paise to 56 paise, from where they were hiked by a further 10 paise per km. Commuters grappling with these high prices have also to contend with the revocation of the daily bus pass system.
