Three wheeler sales to pick-up pace

The re­moval of per­mit sys­tem in states like Ma­ha­rash­tra, and the in­tel­li­gent use of tech­nol­ogy to stay con­nected with the ground are some of the rea­sons be­ing touted for the rise in three wheeler sales. With shared mo­bil­ity providers like Ola ag­gres­sively ex­pand­ing three-wheeler trans­porta­tion to pro­vide last mile con­nec­tiv­ity for city com­muters, the three wheeler mar­ket is ex­pected to rise at good speed. Ma­ha­rash­tra ac­counts for 10 per cent of the over­all three wheeler mar­ket, and will soon see Delhi join it with the re­lease of fresh per­mits that add be­tween 30,000 and 40,000 three wheel­ers per an­num. With the app.-based model prov­ing healthy in terms of trans­form­ing the im­age of an auto rick­shaw in the minds of peo­ple, the three-wheeler mar­ket, ac­cord­ing to in­dus­try ex­perts, is likely to cross the ma­jor mile­stone of one­mil­lion units in the next cou­ple of years. The do­mes­tic mar­ket is ex­pected to cross its pre­vi­ous peak of 5.5 lakh units per an­num. Pas­sen­ger car­ry­ing three-wheel­ers are ex­pected to cross the crit­i­cal half a mil­lion mark in the do­mes­tic mar­ket by 2019-2020.
