BIS closes Chennai hallmarking centre
After making a surprise visit to Chennaibased A-1 Hallmarking Centre and finding irregularities, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has asked that the centre be closed with immediate effect, citing unethical practice. Authorities from the standards bureau had found 12.6 kg out of 42 kg of gold jewellery spuriously hallmarked. It began with a random inspection about two months back, when BIS as a part of its market surveillance exercise had taken jewellery from a licensed jewellery house and had it examined at a BIS referral lab, to find that it was under caratage. Despite being asked to stop hallmarking activities until further notice, A-1 Hallmarking Centre continued doing so.
