BIS closes Chen­nai hall­mark­ing cen­tre

Af­ter mak­ing a sur­prise visit to Chen­naibased A-1 Hall­mark­ing Cen­tre and find­ing ir­reg­u­lar­i­ties, the Bureau of In­dian Stan­dards (BIS) has asked that the cen­tre be closed with im­me­di­ate ef­fect, cit­ing un­eth­i­cal prac­tice. Au­thor­i­ties from the stan­dards bureau had found 12.6 kg out of 42 kg of gold jew­ellery spu­ri­ously hall­marked. It be­gan with a ran­dom in­spec­tion about two months back, when BIS as a part of its mar­ket sur­veil­lance ex­er­cise had taken jew­ellery from a li­censed jew­ellery house and had it ex­am­ined at a BIS re­fer­ral lab, to find that it was un­der caratage. De­spite be­ing asked to stop hall­mark­ing ac­tiv­i­ties un­til fur­ther no­tice, A-1 Hall­mark­ing Cen­tre con­tin­ued do­ing so.
