Any cus­tomer who pur­chases hall­marked sil­ver jew­ellery can get the same tested from any BISrec­og­nized as­say­ing and hall­mark­ing cen­tre. The cash memo is­sued to the cus­tomer by the li­censee jeweller shall in­di­cate fine­ness, in ad­di­tion to other legally manda­tory de­tails. In case the hall­marked jew­ellery/arte­facts sam­ple brought by the con­sumer is found to be of lesser pu­rity than that marked on the jew­ellery/arte­facts, the testing charges would be

re­funded to the con­sumer by the cen­tre who had hall­marked the jew­ellery/arte­facts. The jeweller/ man­u­fac­turer shall be obliged to sat­isfy the cus­tomer through re­place­ment. In case the sam­ple fails the first time, the jeweller/ man­u­fac­turer would be is­sued warn­ing for tak­ing cor­rec­tive ac­tions. In case of a sec­ond fail­ure within a pe­riod of six months, the li­cense would be pro­cessed for can­cel­la­tion. The sub­mis­sion of sil­ver jew­ellery ar­ti­cles/arte­facts for hall­mark­ing shall be stopped im­me­di­ately if di­rected to do so by BIS for any rea­son.
