Till the time of go­ing to press, none of the five failed brands had an­swered our queries. Lip­stick: There was very lit­tle in­for­ma­tion on the cheap brands, and some com­pa­nies could not be con­tacted. The ex­pen­sive brands did not con­tain heavy met­als. Ka­jal: Most of the cheaper brands did not re­spond. L’Oreal and May­bel­line said that they had been given ex­emp­tion be­cause of the small size of the packs.

As for con­sumers, in the ab­sence of la­belling in­for­ma­tion, how should they know that they are buy­ing safe prod­ucts? Here are some sug­ges­tions:
