Many phy­tonu­tri­ent sup­ple­ments are avail­able in the mar­ket. These come in tablets, cap­sules, pow­ders, or liq­uids. The ad­van­tage of tak­ing any sup­ple­ment is that one can eas­ily con­trol the amount to be con­sumed.

The dis­ad­van­tage is that there are no strict reg­u­la­tions for phy­tonu­tri­ent sup­ple­ments or any other nu­tri­tional sup­ple­ment in In­dia, and so their au­then­tic­ity and pu­rity can be a con­cern. Any food that claims to be or­ganic or claims to have phy­tonu­tri­ents can turn out to be mis­lead­ing. Be­sides, sup­ple­ments can­not be a sub­sti­tute for all of the good ef­fects of con­sum­ing phy­tonu­tri­ent-rich foods. The com­bi­na­tion of phy­tonu­tri­ents, vi­ta­mins, min­er­als, es­sen­tial fatty acids, and fi­bres in food is com­plex and unique. It is im­por­tant to note that the in­ter­ac­tion of the nu­tri­ents found in whole foods could be the rea­son for the health ben­e­fits as­so­ci­ated with them. Eat­ing a healthy va­ri­ety of foods ev­ery day, in­clud­ing plenty of phy­tonu­tri­ent-rich plant foods, is the rec­om­mended way to stay healthy.
