Mark­ing /La­belling As per FSS Reg­u­la­tions and Le­gal Metrol­ogy Rules, the fol­low­ing in­for­ma­tion shall be marked on the prod­uct la­bel: a) Name of the prod­uct b) Name and ad­dress of man­u­fac­turer c) Batch num­ber d) Date or month of man­u­fac­ture e) Net weight of the con­tents (in gram or kilo­gram) f) List of in­gre­di­ents g) FSSAI li­cense num­ber h) Veg­e­tar­ian mark (green dot) i) MRP (in Rs) j) The words ‘Best be­fore’ (month and year to be in­di­cated) k) In­struc­tions for stor­age and use l) Nu­tri­tional in­for­ma­tion m) Cus­tomer-care de­tails Crem­ica had not men­tioned net weight. All other brands had pro­vided the re­quired in­for­ma­tion.

Pack­ag­ing plays an im­por­tant role in main­tain­ing con­sis­tent quality of the prod­uct. Among the brands we tested, seven – Maggi, Kis­san, Del­monte, Re­liance Se­lect, Patan­jali, Tops and Mum’s – are in glass bot­tle. Heinz, Weik­field and Crem­ica are in tam­per­proof, non-break­able plas­tic bot­tle. Tasty Treat and Tasty Won­ders are in poly pouch.
