Cosmo: Tell us a bit about your journey...
Suneet Varma: “A hunger to learn hash kept me going and helped me comme through shining. I am 47. To many,, it may seem old, some advised me to hang my boots, but I am still open tot challenges, the harder the better.” SV: “Yes, Threadbare will be out byy yearend. 25 years later, I feel I have something to say, as I was one of the first who started out in the industry. The book captures the birth of NIFT, media explosion, boom in fashion magazines, stylingg... More than my personal journey, thehe book is about my work. I’ve archived every single photoshoot since 1992. I have a room full of polaroids!”
C: What’s your favourite fashion memory?
SV: “When Sarah Jessica Parker flaunted my line for Judith Leiber clutches at Sex and the City premieres, all over the world. I’ve always felt India has more to offer the West than just the sari. I was the only Indian designer to have won this honour and it was great to see Jennifer Lopez and Hilary Swank carry my bags.”
C: And what does the future hold for Suneet Varma?
SV: “I’ve started a love affair with technology, learning to download movies, playing Angry Birds (I still haven’t got the hang of it—quite angry with Angry Birds). I want to connect with young people (my nephew and nieces, who are between 14-19) who will drive the economy, and spend more time with my mom, who has been a pillar of support.”
