Enterprise mobility could help transform India
Considering its ubiquity, mobile phones and mobile-enabled solutions can be used in almost every sector to great effect. And India, with a big base of mobile phone subscribers is at the right juncture to fully exploit the potential of this technology.
For example, a 2013 India specific report by GSMA in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group states
that India could see a significant jump in GDP contribution from the mobile ecosystem as penetration grows across the country. The report predicts that by 2020, the mobile ecosystem could contribute almost ` 21.6 lakh crore to India’s GDP, creating 4.1 million additional jobs, and generating significant contribution through infrastructure investments.
Besides the direct contribution, the social and business impact delivered by mobile-enabled solutions is extremely significant. Consider a sector like healthcare, where India has approximately only six doctors for every 10,000 citizens. In rural areas, where delivering proper healthcare services is extremely challenging, mobile phones can be used for remote disease diagnostics and delivering advice for real-time treatment.
An inspiring project that highlights the success of mobile-enabled solutions in the healthcare sector is the e-mamta, a mother and child Web-based tracking project in Gujarat aimed at improving maternal and child health services delivery in rural as well as urban areas and subsequently reduce high maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate.
Reaching out to more than 20,000 people across 26 districts, the project has led to a 4-point drop in infant mortality rate in less than two years since it was rolled out by the Gujarat government.
Similar examples can be seen across sectors like agriculture and education, where mobile-enabled solutions have made a big difference. Farmers have better access to real-time information, which in turn, helps them to sell their produce at better prices.
Considering their reach and low-cost factor, mobileenabled solutions are being used by enterprises for every possible function—from curbing fraud, opening bank accounts, sales force automation, and much more.
In the future, expect India to lead the mobile revolution in terms of impact and use cases.
The future is bright, and the possibilities of using mobileenabled solutions are limited by only our imagination.
