E-readers & portable MPS struggling in Japan

As per Euromonitor, both e-readers and portable media players (MPS) struggled in 2015 in Japan due to the strong competition from smartphones and tablets. The e-readers category was dominated by Amazon, with this player seeing the strongest gain in retail volume share in 2015 and rising to 51%. The widening availability of larger smartphones or ‘phablets’ in a convenient size for reading will continue to erode interest in both e-readers and portable MPS and pose strong competition through 2020. The decline in consumer electronics softened in 2015 thanks to technology and tourist demand. One positive element observed in the market by end 2015 was that consumer electronics and appliance specialist retailers benefited from the stronger focus on omni-channel approach encouraged by showrooming. The forecast period recovery will be driven by smartphones and smartwatches.
