ZVONAREVA TO PLAY AT MUMBAI OPEN

Former World No. 2 Vera Zvonareva, a former Wimbledon and U.S. Open finalist, will feature in the WTA $125K Mumbai Open starting from Saturday. The 33-year-old Russian who had a successful 2010 calendar year returned to the pro circuit in September after two years away due to injuries and motherhood. The 19-year-old Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus who lost to Maria Sharapova at the Tianjin WTA three weeks ago will head the seeding list which will feature players from 19 countries. Sabalenka is currently World No. 79 in WTA rankings. Former world No.12 Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium who is currently ranked 113th will also be in action at Cricket Club of India tennis courts here. Four Indian players would be given wild cards in the main draw and two more in the qualifying stage. Ankita Raina, Karman Kaur Thandi, Maharashtr­a state No.1 Rutuja Bhosale and world junior No.18 Zeel Desai are set to get wild cards. The women’s singles winner will get $20,000 and 160 WTA points while the losing finalist will receive $11,000 and 95 points.
