Close shave for 136 peo­ple as craft’s belly grazes wall

Mum­bai: In a po­ten­tially ma­jor avi­a­tion catas­tro­phe, an Air In­dia Ex­press air­craft IX-611 – on its way to Dubai from Tiruchi­ra­palli (Trichy) air­port – hit the lo­cal­izer an­tenna and the nearby brick bound­ary wall dur­ing take­off. The in­ci­dent took place in the wee hours of Fri­day.

The flight re­mained air­borne for around four hours with se­vere dam­age to its un­der­belly be­fore land­ing at Mum­bai’s Ch­ha­tra­p­ati Shivaji In­ter­na­tional Air­port (CSIA) at about 5:35 am. Turn to P4

Air In­dia Ex­press flight IX611 takes off from Trichy for Dubai at 1.30 am on Fri­day. The air­craft’s wheels hit the perime­ter wall, ILS while tak­ing off. With 136 peo­ple on board, the flight con­tin­ues to Dubai. Trichy Air­port of­fi­cials no­tice a sec­tion of the perime­ter wall is dam­aged and alert pilots Pilots say air­craft sys­tems were op­er­at­ing nor­mally. Later, it is found that the fuse­lage of the plane and wheels are dam­aged. Plane lands in Mum­bai at 5:35 am, af­ter be­ing in air for four hours. All the pas­sen­gers are safe. The pilots are derostered, pend­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
