Rajya Sabha MP accused of sexually exploiting woman
Former CPI(M) leader and member of Rajya Sabha, Ritabrata Banerjee, has been summoned by the West Bengal CID in connection with a sexual exploitation complaint.
A software engineer from Balurghat in South Dinajpore district has alleged that Banerjee had got into a physical relationship with her under the false pretext of marriage but later backed out.
A team of CID officials went to Banerjee’s Garia residence on Thursday. Since he was not there, they pasted a copy of the notice on the door.
A senior CID official said they had taken over investigation of the complaint of sexual exploitation and would like to interrogate him. The official said Banerjee had been asked to appear at the CID office on Friday.
“We will have to question both the accused and the complainant and go through all digital documents, including emails, WhatsApp messages and text messages, exchanged between the two,” the official added.
Meanwhile, the woman has been summoned by Delhi Police. “Since it was a complaint against a Rajya Sabha member, I had written to the parliamentary chairman of the Upper house of Parliament along with all the evidence. I will definitely go to Delhi for the sake of the investigation,” the woman said while talking to mediapersons.
