Drunk man assaults wife, sets her ablaze for refusing to conceive
A drunk man set his 28- yearold wife ablaze in Thane after she refused to conceive. He first assaulted her and later poured kerosene on her and lit a matchstick. She was rushed to hospital and her condition is said to be critical.
The accused husband, Vijay Gawale ( 35), used to get into regular fights with his wife at their residence in Bhiwandi’s Anjur Phata. After setting his wife on fire on Saturday, Gawale escaped from the house. After the cops learnt about the incident, they arrested him from Kalyan railway station.
They said that the accused was addicted to drinking and often assaulted his wife and tor tured her for not conceiving.
“The husband and wife duo fought regularly over trivial issues. After getting drunk, the accused husband would assault her on a regular basis. The woman was tortured and harassed mentally and physically since she did not want to conceive,” said a Narpoli police officer.
“During Saturday’s incident, the man assaulted the woman and later set her ablaze after she refused to conceive. The husband then escaped for his native place but was arrested by the police,” said DD Shivthare, senior inspector, Narpoli police station.
“We have arrested him under Section 307 ( attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The woman has been kept under observation at the Thane Civil Hospital, while the Bhiwandi court has remanded the accused husband to police custody for four days,” Shivthare added.
