Akari today, paper and light sculpture

Domus - - NEWS -

Two shows at the Noguchi Museum in New York celebrate the future and past of the Akari lamp-sculpture. “Akari: Sculpture by Other Means” covers the past: in 1951, Noguchi was asked by the mayor of Gifu City to revive the local lantern industry. He was inspired by night fishing light attractors, adding electricity: Noguchi created over 200 models and 31 patents. Instead, “Akari Unfolded: A Collection by Ymer&Malta” looks to the future: five contemporary designers interpret the Akari and create a collection of 26 lamps for the French gallery Ymer&Malta. www.noguchi.org
