Forced to sign inspection report, says Assam activist

Down to Earth - - THE FORTNIGHT - DOWN TO EARTH

IN AN affidavit filed before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Assam-based wildlife activist Rohit Choudhury has said that the state government officials forced him to sign a site inspection report. Choudhury was asked by NGT on May 21 to inspect the 66 km stretch of National Highway-37 which runs parallel to the Kaziranga National Park and check if steps have been taken to prevent death of wild animals in road accidents. He says that instead of taking measures to prevent accidents, the government has widened the road by 3 m, increasing the total width to 10 m. The site inspection was conducted on July 13 .
