Salt turn­ing black

Salt pro­duced in var­i­ous parts of Tu­ti­corin, Tamil Nadu, is ex­posed to air pol­lu­tion which turns it black. Fly ash bil­low­ing from power plant chim­neys gets de­posited on salt pans at Ayya­narku­lam, Tharu­vaiku­lam, Keezha Arasadi and Pat­ti­na­maruthur. About 150 to 200 hectares of salt pans, lo­cated about five kilo­me­tres from the power plants, are fac­ing the prob­lem. The de­po­si­tion of ash de­grades the qual­ity of salt in the mar­ket but gov­ern­ment de­part­ments con­cerned or the state's Pol­lu­tion Con­trol Board is yet to take ac­tion
