Hike in grants for building toilets
NITIN GADKARI, Union minister for rural development, drinking water and sanitation, announced an increase in incentives for construction of all types of toilets -community sanitary complex, individual household toilets, school toilets and anganwadi toilets. Individual toilets will now get ` 15,000 instead of the current grant of ` 10,000. He also announced that the last government's flagship rural jobs programme, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), would be delinked from construction of individual household latrines (IHHLs). By de-linking the sanitation mission from MGNREGS, the NDA government has reversed the decision of the previous Congress-led UPA government. In 2012, the then rural affairs minister, Jairam Ramesh, had taken the decision to link IHHL with MGNREGS. It helped increase monetary incentive for improving sanitation.
