DCGI circular on poultry feed
THE DRUGS Controller General of India (DCGI) has admitted that non-therapeutic use of antibiotics is rampant in poultry and cattle feed. It has asked drug controllers in all states and Union Territories to ensure that animal feed does not contain antibiotics. DCGI had issued similar instructions in June. The latest circular follows a letter by the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi, to the Union health minister highlighting the problem. The letter cited recent findings by Delhi-based non-profit Centre for Science and Environment that say poultry farmers use antibiotics to increase meat production.
