Down to Earth - - THE FORTNIGHT -

published in the journal, TheLancet, says reduction of premature deaths by 40 per cent should be one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals for 2016-30. The goals are to be formulated in 2015. The current draft includes 17 overarching goals, and one of them is to "ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages". The paper says that "feasible goals with some quantifiable, measurable targets can influence governments" and reduction in premature deaths of people under 70 is an important quantifiable goal. Explaining the use of the age limit of 70, it says, "Global life expectancy is now about 70 years. We have defined premature death somewhat arbitrarily as death before age 70 years."
