Killer cookhouse

Down to Earth - - LETTERS -

"Silent threat" (October 1-15, 2014) envisages the need for a safe kitchen. Gone are the days when one used firewood and earthen utensils for cooking. Urbanisation has replaced traditional methods of cooking with easy-to-use modern techniques, making recipes easier with appliances like microwave and rice cooker. People like to have what they call a "smart kitchen". But smart does not necessarily mean safe. Many people today use teflon-coated non-stick utensils, which pose health hazards. The architecture, too, is flawed. Most modern kitchens have a compact design, which leaves little room for ventilation.
