Farmer's due

Down to Earth - - LETTERS -

"Bitter sweet" (November 1-15, 2014) draws our attention towards the poor condition of sugarcane farmers in the country. Despite struggling for days in fields, the sugarcane farmers get poor returns. While sugar mills, mostly owned by sugar cooperatives, make big money, the farmers rarely get their dues on time. Recently, the Supreme Court came to their rescue and ordered owners of sugar mills to pay the money they owe to the growers by October 31. Apart from this, a mechanism for cash on delivery should be put in place to help the farmers so that they get their dues immediately without hassles.
