Pro­posal to cut trans fats

draft no­ti­fi­ca­tion of the Food Safety and Stan­dards Author­ity of In­dia pro­poses to limit the max­i­mum level of trans fatty acids to five per cent (by weight of to­tal quan­tity), in fats, oils and hy­dro­genated veg­etable oils. In In­dia, the present max­i­mum limit for trans fatty acids is 10 per cent by weight. The no­ti­fi­ca­tion was first re­leased in Novem­ber and is open for sug­ges­tions and ob­jec­tions by the public till Fe­bru­ary 2015. The draft, how­ever, does not talk about reg­u­la­tions on la­belling and pack­ag­ing. The fi­nal no­ti­fi­ca­tion would be im­ple­mented from Au­gust 2016.
