This is with reference to cover story "Lethal Target" (January 1-15). The death of 15 women at sterilisation camps in Chhattisgarh exposes the pathetic state of free medical camps in India. Surprisingly, instead of taking the moral responsibility for the fiasco, the state health minister put the blame on the doctor and suspended him. Eighty-three surgeries in five hours that too by one doctor tells the sorry state of such free camps, where meeting the targets is given priority over rendering quality medical assistance. The United Nations has rightly summed up the loss of lives of young women as a great human tragedy. Most of the free medical camps held so far for the poor have proved to be disasters, with many losing vision after cataract operations across the country. It is time that government addressed this issue on priority.
