Assam to monitor pesticides in vegetables
government has decided to form a regulatory body to monitor pesticide use in vegetable cultivation in the state. Citing abuse of pesticide as a major health hazard, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi declared steps to regulate its use. The state government will soon set up laboratories in all districts to test pesticide contents in vegetables. "A permissible limit will be set, and if pesticide is found beyond that level, cultivators will be fined and may also be banned from taking up cultivation activities again," said Gogoi. He said that any member of the public will be able to file a complaint with the regulatory body. The regulatory body will coordinate with the district administration to supervise farmers.
