Curb on antibiotic use for poultry growth

Down to Earth - - THE FORTNIGHT - A RECENT

draft order of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has proposed to curb the use of antibiotics as a growth promoter in poultry in India. Indians are developing resistance to antibiotics and are falling prey to a host of otherwise curable ailments.

This might be due to large-scale unregulated use of antibiotics in the poultry and meat industry. The order covers imported products as well. This means it would restrict the import of chicken from the US where huge amounts of antibiotics are known to be used in poultry farming. The order issues directions to ensure compliance to directors and commissioners of animal husbandry departments of states and Union territories.
