CHINA OF­FERS trou­bling in­sights into the im­pacts and costs of large-scale growth of coal-fired plants. Given that China's coal­based elec­tric­ity gen­er­a­tion is al­most five times that of In­dia, air pol­lu­tion is one of the most vis­i­ble costs that has had se­vere ef­fect on health. Re­cent stud­ies on China's air pol­lu­tion found that over 64 per cent of the to­tal load of pol­lu­tants and over 60 per cent of the PM 2.5 were the re­sult of coal com­bus­tion in fac­to­ries and power plants.
