Fukushima challenge
Atomic Energy Agency has applauded Japan's efforts to decommission the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, which was responsible for the nuclear disaster in the country in March 2011. However, the agency says that the situation remains complex. While increasing amount of contaminated water poses a short-term challenge, removing highly radioactive spent fuel, including damaged fuel and fuel debris, from the reactors that suffered meltdowns poses a major long-term challenge.
