Fukushima chal­lenge

Atomic En­ergy Agency has ap­plauded Ja­pan's ef­forts to de­com­mis­sion the Fukushima Dai­ichi Nu­clear Power Sta­tion, which was re­spon­si­ble for the nu­clear dis­as­ter in the coun­try in March 2011. How­ever, the agency says that the sit­u­a­tion re­mains com­plex. While in­creas­ing amount of con­tam­i­nated wa­ter poses a short-term chal­lenge, re­mov­ing highly ra­dioac­tive spent fuel, in­clud­ing dam­aged fuel and fuel de­bris, from the re­ac­tors that suf­fered melt­downs poses a ma­jor long-term chal­lenge.
