In­dia is watch­ing anx­iously as July pro­gresses. Good rains in June have spurred agri­cul­tural ac­tiv­ity. But as data over a more than 100year pe­riod shows, it is the rain­fall in July that re­ally counts. And with weather author­i­ties pre­dict­ing an eight per cent deficit rain­fall in July, In­dia's agrar­ian cri­sis could only worsen.
