Maggi in con­sumer court

I N D I A' S A P E X con­sumer griev­ance re­dres­sal com­mis­sion, the Na­tional Con­sumer Dis­putes Re­dres­sal Com­mis­sion (NCDRC) has ad­mit­ted the com­plaint of the Union Min­istry of Con­sumer Af­fairs, Food and Pub­lic Dis­tri­bu­tion against food ma­jor Nes­tle In­dia. The min­istry has sought class ac­tion against the com­pany for adopt­ing un­fair and de­cep­tive trade prac­tices, and mis­lead­ing ad­ver­tise­ments to sell Maggi noo­dles. It has also sought 640 crore in dam­ages from Nes­tle In­dia. This is the firstever class ac­tion com­plaint filed by the gov­ern­ment on be­half of con­sumers. Re­cently, Nes­tle In­dia had got a sig­nif­i­cant respite, when the Bom­bay High Court lifted the ban on the sale of nine in­stant noo­dle brands.
