Habitat, not climate

Down to Earth - - SCIENCE -

TERRE STRIAL VERTEBRATE S are more abundant on earth than aquatic ones. Very little is known about how or why this difference occurs. Research now suggests that this variation has been brought about by the habitat in which the animals live— groups living on land proliferate more rapidly than those in water. There is a higher rate of extinction in both marine and freshwater environments, as animals in these habitats do not have the option to migrate and escape. Biology Letters, July 22
