Canberra to be powered by renewable energy by 2025
THE GOVERNMENT of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has announced that federal capital Canberra will be powered entirely by renewable energy by 2025. ACT has already committed to a target of 90 per cent renewable energy within the next five years and has backed a series of large-scale wind and solar projects, both local and inter-state. Australian environment minister Simon Corbell said that shifting the target to 100 per cent would make Canberra a world leader. "It means more jobs and more investment in the ACT economy; it means a complete de-carbonisation of our electricity supply sector which will lead to further reductions in our city's greenhouse gas emissions," he said.
