Drone to track tigers in the Sundarbans
THE WEST Bengal forest department has planned to use a drone over the Sundarbans to track the movement of tigers and encroachers in the region. "Sitting at one point we would be able to scan a forest area of 15-20 sq km. It will be a force multiplier for us as we would be able to track movements with limited staff," Sundarban Biosphere Reserve Director Pradeep Vyas said. Besides tracking the movements of a tiger that requires medical attention or is a threat to the nearby village residents, the drone would help catch encroachers in the protected areas. The forest department will buy the drone from a specialised agency for ` 20-30 lakh.
