In the late 1980s, af­ter three years of con­sec­u­tive drought, De­sai's fam­ily landed in a huge agri­cul­tural debt when their sug­ar­cane crop failed. He left his engi­neer­ing pro­fes­sion in 1992 to take up full-time or­ganic farming as a way out of this dis­tress. He un­der­went train­ing at Kr­ishi Prayog Pari­vara (KPP). De­sai to­day heads the Or­ganic Food Club, which sup­plies or­ganic food to Ben­galuru-based out­lets.
