Misuse of polyandry

Down to Earth - - LETTERS -

This refers to "Possessed by land" (16-31 August, 2015). We

found similar cases during our field work in Hapur district and other areas of western Uttar Pradesh. Many families practice polyandry as a means to control women's labour on farms. During another research in southern Rajasthan, I observed tribal households claim rights over large tracts of land using polyandry. They also use it as a means to obtain free labour to till the land. Such instances call for a deeper investigation into land grab within family structures through such insidious means.
