Use insects as food, says UK report

Down to Earth - - THE FORTNIGHT -

A REPORT by the UK government's Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has stated that insects should become a part of people's staple diet around the world as an environmentfriendly alternative to meat. But persuading consumers to overcome the yuck factor would be difficult, says the report, which assessed challenges to the development of the food system in the next 10 years. The report also recommends increased consumption of seaweed. Labgrown meat is suggested as another alternative protein source because it requires 99 per cent less land to produce and emits 96 per cent less greenhouse gases. www. downtoearth.org.in
