WHO de­clares Liberia Ebola-free

THE WORLD Health Or­ga­ni­za­tion ( re­cently de­clared the end of the most re­cent out­break of Ebola in Liberia. It said all known chains of trans­mis­sion had been stopped in West Africa. How­ever, the UN health agency said more flare-ups were ex­pected and strong sur­veil­lance and re­sponse sys­tems would be crit­i­cal in the months to come. Liberia was first de­clared Ebola-free in May 2015, but the virus has come back twice since then, with the lat­est flareup oc­cur­ring in Novem­ber, 2015. Ebola claimed 11,300 lives in West Africa. There were over 28,500 in­fec­tions. The epi­demic left 17,000 sur­vivors with lin­ger­ing symp­toms. www.down­toearth.org.in/africa
