Agriculture first

Down to Earth - - LETTERS -

This refers to the cover story "Finding answers to the 34 million question" (1-15 December, 2015). The narrative falls short of suggesting remedies. the farm sector's contribution to the national GDP may be less than that of the construction and service sectors, but it produces food grains, the very vital ingredient that sustains life. Thus, society cannot afford to ignore agriculture merely on the basis of GDP statistics. A short supply of food grains impacts even the construction and service sectors.

Besides, the farm sector has always remained a major employer of the country's total workforce. The government should therefore take initiatives to tackle the current slide. To addres the shortage of farm workers, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) needs to be directed at the farm sector.
