India to bid adieu to five-year plans

Down to Earth - - THE FORTNIGHT -

AFTER SCRAPPING the Planning Commission, the Narendra Modi government is now readying to say goodbye to five-year plans of the country. According to the commission's successor, the Niti Ayog, the government would consider all plan documents irrespective of periodicity. The government will soon direct the Ayog for the preparation of the documents. The five-year plan was a centralised and integrated national economic programme adopted soon after Independence and was based on the Soviet model. Currently, the country is in the 12th plan period 2012-2017. www.down
