Camera traps reveal snow leopards in Sikkim
WWF-INDIA recently released photos of the highly elusive snow leopard captured by camera traps set up in four locations in north Sikkim. It was part of the conservation organisation's pilot effort to understand the presence of snow leopards in the region following accounts by local yak herders, called dokpas. The cameras have also captured other mountain wildlife such as the rare Pallas's cat, blue sheep, Tibetan argali and freeranging dogs. Through the exercise, WWFIndia aims at developing conservation plans, such as relocating snow leopards to higher altitudes that will help reduce the impact of climate change on the highly vulnerable species.
