Wa­ter cri­sis in the mak­ing

DATA RELE ASED by the Union wa­ter re­sources min­istry re­cently shows that wa­ter in In­dia's reser­voirs has reached alarm­ingly low lev­els. Stor­age stood at 59 bil­lion cu­bic me­tres ( or 38 per cent of the in­stalled ca­pac­ity in 91 ma­jor reser­voirs. The reser­voirs in­cluded in the sur­vey ac­count for 158

or 62 per cent of In­dia's to­tal stor­age of 253 The cur­rent lev­els amount to just 78 per cent of the stor­age lev­els dur­ing the cor­re­spond­ing pe­riod last year and just about three-fourths the av­er­age stor­age over the past decade.
