Apex court asks for scientific proof of link between cigarettes and cancer

Down to Earth - - THE FORTNIGHT -

THE SUPREME Court recently sought scientific proof to explain how smoking can lead to lung or throat cancer. The court was responding to a public-interest petition filed by Umesh Narain Sharma, a lawyer at the Allahabad High Court. The petitioner demanded that cigarettes be sold in plain packets instead of attractive packaging often used by the companies as a ploy to divert consumers' attention from the pictorial warnings on throat and lung cancer printed on the cover. Issuing a notice to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Bench comprising Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice U U Lalit asked Sharma if cancer was scientifically linked to smoking.
