The fungal difference

Down to Earth - - SCIENCE -

WHY ARE Asian bats surviving the white-nose syndrome that is wiping out populations in North America? Researchers say the fungus that causes the disease is endemic in Asia, so bats have coexisted with it. Also, the Asian bats have lower levels of infection as compared to their North American counterparts and, therefore, are resistant to the fungus.
