Saurians on the brink
The gharial, a unique crocodilian species native to South Asia, is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. But there are people fighting to bring it back from the brink. DownToEarth travels to the Gharial Breeding Centre at Deori in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district. The wild gharial population has increased to 1,162 individuals at this centre, which is part of the Gharial Conservation Programme, one of India's best-faring wildlife conservation efforts. We find out how the programme is rolled out and what makes it successful.
