Sau­ri­ans on the brink

The ghar­ial, a unique crocodil­ian species na­tive to South Asia, is listed as crit­i­cally en­dan­gered by the IUCN. But there are peo­ple fight­ing to bring it back from the brink. DownToEarth trav­els to the Ghar­ial Breed­ing Cen­tre at De­ori in Mad­hya Pradesh's Morena dis­trict. The wild ghar­ial pop­u­la­tion has in­creased to 1,162 in­di­vid­u­als at this cen­tre, which is part of the Ghar­ial Con­ser­va­tion Pro­gramme, one of In­dia's best-far­ing wildlife con­ser­va­tion ef­forts. We find out how the pro­gramme is rolled out and what makes it suc­cess­ful.
